Feeling Helpless with wife's depression

My wife is a senior minister at a small church here in south Florida. I am very scared now as she has isolated herself from everything and everyone. She cries all the time and has no desire or interest in the ministry. She has seen a doctor and is on medications for depression, but it has not worked much. I pray for her all the time and help out with all the house work and drive her everywhere including to work, as she told me that she wanted to hurt herself by crashing the car into a tree. I am scared and helpless.

Get your wife the help she needs
by: Kelly

Dear friend. Your wife is obviously suffering from clinical depression, which is very common among the clergy. Often the weight of responsibility becomes too great to bear and the result is despair and frustration. It is imperative that she seek professional help. A therapist, psychiatrist, or family doctor is a great place to start. A sabbatical or medical leave is most likely in her future. You stated she was threatening to harm herself. You may have to take the painful step of having her committed to make sure she gets the help she needs. Your local police department can advise you on how to do this. They will come and get her and place her somewhere safe for a period of time for her own protection. A family intervention might also be in order where you all come together and lovingly urge her to get the help she needs.

I am a man, but I have been in her shoes and I know how this feels. Countless pastors like myself and your wife suffer from depression, anxiety, and exhaustion brought on by the heavy burden of our calling. I sought help and it made all the difference and I'm still in the ministry.

There is light at the end of this dark tunnel.
The time to act is now. Her life may depend on it. You and her are in my thoughts and prayers.
