I am asked to be a Pastor.................but

by Mike

I am a long time member at my church and we are growing. The senior pastor asked me if I would like to be an elder in the church, I was at first humbled and excited but then doubt stepped in.

When I was 15 years old I got a girl pregnant and we had an abortion. I was not with the lord then and in my childish mind I thought that it was the right thing to do. I have never told anyone about this incident.

Once I became a Christian and realized the horror that I had done, I repented and gave it all up to God. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about this. I am thinking about turning down the position because of this. If someone at the church were to find out it could ruin the credibility of my pastor and I would not be able to handle the repercussions of that.

I'm 40 now, married 15 years and have wonderful children. I haven't slept a single night since I have been asked. I just don't know what to do.

Thank you

I believe that when we were still sinners Christ died for us, and as such, He has freed us from the bondage of sin's dominion, if you had not become a Christian you would be guilty before Him, but you have believed the truth and have trusted that Christ has forgiven you. Every single pastor/elder has a pre-Christ life, sins done in our unbelief, if each of us held to your fear of being not qualified, none of us could ever step into ministry because we would all be disqualified. It sounds like you are truly repentant, and scripture tells us that you are truly forgiven, so if you feel that God is calling you into this opportunity to serve as an elder, take a step of faith and follow the Lord Jesus as it is Him that works in us to will and do for His good pleasure...God bless you my brother, go and serve the Lord well!

Dear Friend .Years ago I found myself in a a situation that caused me not to sleep .The situation , although different in nature , had a similar affect on me .The most liberating thing I ever did was to share that thing with my senior pastor .You may even find that He also has been through something similar .We all have .

As a pastor I would like to say that I wish all my elders were that sensitive to their sin. I do not believe that the events as you described make you less qualified to be an elder. In fact, the character which you are currently showing makes me inclined to believe that you are more than qualified.
