Lenten Divorce

by Daniel Sherman
(Michigan, USA)

A pastor friend of mine decided this year to write a daily devotional guide for his congregation members to use during Lent. He is an excellent writer - but even the best make mistakes.

For one of his daily devotions my friend directed people to read and respond to Matthew 15:31 - "The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel." (NIV)

However, he mis-typed. Instead of Matthew 15:31, he listed Matthew 5:31 - "Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce."

Needless to say, he was met with a few perplexed expressions the following Sunday.
