Loyalty to Pastoral Staff as the Senior Pastor.

As the Senior/Lead Pastor of a church I have multiple Pastoral Staff members under my leadership. One of those staff members has been a full-time Pastor for the past 4+ years and has never done anything immoral, un-scriptual or inappropriate. I have a church member who continues to inform me that they are considering leaving the church because of a difference of opinion with that pastor. Who do I be loyal to? How would you handle this situation?

Loyal Senior Pastor
by: Elizabeth Levesque

hello senior pastor,
I am retired clergy (25 years).
this is really a no brainer for me. you have a parishioner with a difference of opinion toward this pastor you have on your staff who has been wonderful for 4 years. this parishioner is 'threatening' to leave, if what? you don't reprimand someone on your pastoral staff? Seriously, I saw so much of this in pastoral ministry it made me nauseous. Stand by your pastoral staff. Let the parishioner have a hissy fit and leave. I saw so many people leave over so many important things like pastoral infidelity, financial fraud and embezzlement, that petty little people who leave over things like petty little opinions are nothing. The person threatening to leave is a petty little person and if you have a wonderful pastoral staff person, then by all means, keep them and let the petty parishioner take their leave. The Church is a voluntary enterprise. No one has to stay. People vote with their feet so let them vote. Good pastoral staff are hard to find but petty little opinionated parishioners who use the threat of leaving to knock down pastoral staff, well, don't let the door hit ya on the way out, i say! Cheers and blessings. Elizabeth+
